Job description

I am an assistant professor in the Computer Science department at Gonzaga University where I teach various CS courses (e.g., CS1, Human-Computer Interaction, Web Development). I’m also pursuing research focusing on software tools used for CS education which overlaps with research in Human-Computer Interaction and ubiquitous computing.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose the HSU Computer Science program because I wanted to pursue a degree in CS and also remain close to my roots. HSU provided an excellent opportunity to experience the amazing sites of Humboldt County and also pursue my career goals in CS.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

There were many ways that this program prepared me for my job. The HSU CS program prepared me for my job by giving me a strong foundation in CS and encouragement to grow beyond the basics of CS. I was able to do this by exploring additional opportunities available to me as an HSU CS student through an HSU-hosted Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and those hosted at other universities among other unique and rewarding experiences. These experiences encouraged me to be a larger part of the learning community and to strive to succeed while at HSU and when pursuing my current career goals.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

The staff and faculty during my time at HSU were, hands down, the most enjoyable part of the program. The material covered in my courses was great, but I would not have had as positive of an experience without the friendly and supportive people at HSU.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

It may not always be an easy path to take but, for me, it was well worth the time and effort and I believe it can be for you too. You will get out of the program what you put in, but you don’t have to do it alone! The staff and faculty are there to help you succeed (and you can tell!) so make sure to reach out for help. You can’t get help with unasked questions—you don’t have to struggle alone because everyone in the CS program is more than happy to make sure you do not. There are also many great HSU and CS clubs that you can be a part of—make the most of your time at HSU and take advantage of those and any external opportunities provided by the school and program, you will not regret it!
